Q: How did you get started in this business?
I fell into the travel business by chance. I had always traveled a lot when I was younger and eventually had some people contact me about arranging some specific expeditions for them. I then fell into a guiding (ghyding) roll in Argentina and the rest is history!

Q: What do you love most about your job?
I love that our clients trust us with their extremely valuable vacation time. Since I've been in this business for awhile, I understand what it means to have a week off with your friends and family, so I truly love when I can make those "ahhhh" moments happen for others.

Q: What’s one item you can’t travel without?
A small 10 ft. extension cord.

Q: Describe your idea of a perfect vacation.
For me, the perfect vacation is when I can stretch beyond my comfort zone. Often you don’t realize how much a trip or experience impacts you until you return home. I always try to place myself in situations that scare me – like going to a place I’ve never been before or somewhere that speaks another language I'm not familiar with. The world is so full of routine and as humans, we love to surround ourselves with things that make us comfortable. Travel is an immediate way to push someone beyond their comfort zone because it presents them with new experiences – it's a good way to grow and gain knowledge.

Q: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Bali is next on my list. I have never been to Asia, so that's the next chapter.

Q: What advice would you give someone traveling with Ghyd?
We've done our homework, so trust the process. If you have questions, just ask us – we've encountered almost everything! Most importantly though, just enjoy yourself! We're here to provide you with an unforgettable trip.

Q: What’s your favorite thing to do in Costa Rica? What about Panama?
Costa Rica: I love to indulge in fresh ceviche and surf.
Panama: The art of doing nothing at all is my favorite (but doing it by the pool).

Q: Ghyd currently operates luxury villas in Costa Rica and Panama, do you think you will expand into other countries soon?
Absolutely! Costa Rica and Panama are really just launching points for us. We are hoping to expand to three new destinations each year.

Q: What’s some advice if you’re on vacation and the weather isn’t cooperating?
Just be present. Traveling is not about the weather. Stop envisioning what you want the experience to be and just enjoy it for what it is. I will often research the area and see if there are any particular things that happen when it rains and use it as a photo op.

Q: What are you doing to make the world better?
The foundation of our business revolves around partnering with various organizations to help them achieve their fundraising goals. Being a mission-driven company will always be a part of who we are and I love that we can contribute towards the work these amazing groups are doing. To date, we've raised over $6M for their various causes.

The most important safety rules while traveling are pretty similar to the same safety techniques you have likely inherited in your daily routine at home. Stay in groups, don’t walk down dark alleys in the middle of the night in a place you are not familiar with, keep your phone with you; lock your doors, etc. We can all assume those types of daily rituals have become nothing short of human nature. Let’s take a look at some of the more in-depth, easy to use, safety tips that will make you feel much more comfortable on your next experience in a new place.

My family is full of freckled, pale people. Our skin is like lighter fluid in the sun – we burn thoroughly and quickly. When I look back and reminisce about our vacations, I just see a bunch of cooked lobsters. As we have aged, we are all starting to see the long term effects of the sun. The freckles the sun has kissed us with are turning against us. All 6 of my family members have had some sort of pre-melanoma spot removed. This has not stopped us from enjoying the great outdoors, going to the beach, or showing skin – we have just gotten smarter and know the limits of our bodies. In Costa Rica and Panama, the sun can be quite strong since you’re closer to the equator – this makes people more susceptible to burning. Through my experience and some actual science, I want to equip you with some tips on how to have a burn-free vacation while in Central America.
