Why do we go where we go?

Apr 22, 2020

Have you ever wondered why we offer the locations we do?

If you’ve traveled with Ghyd before you will likely know the answer. We can sum it up in one word; seamless. These are the four non-negotiable attributes a location must have in order to be a Ghyd destination:

  • Transportation
  • Cost
  • Climate
  • Experiences

It goes without saying, that our first priority is the safety of our clients and the destinations we offer. Let’s save that for another article – perhaps, the Top 5 Tips to Stay Safe.
Transportation
Before we even consider if a destination has all the other attributes that Ghyd requires, if the approximate travel time from the airport to the villa is over two hours, it takes some serious convincing to change our minds. Of course, at certain times and locations, traffic can play a role in adding to the two-hour window, so we make sure to research the majority of flights and their corresponding arrival time that most of our clients will schedule and make sure that traffic jams are at a minimum. Who wants to be in a van longer than two hours!?

Requirements:
  • Within two hours from the nearest airport
  • Roads are easily accessible
  • Driving is safe (if renting a vehicle)
  • Ease of use
Cost
Next on our list, and not any less important, is everybody’s favorite… how much is this going to set me back?!

Of course, we think that memories don’t have a price tag, but it’s hard to take memories to the bank!

After we have given the “all clear” in regards to transportation, next up is exploring the cost of goods and services. From the big spender to the traveler on a budget, we welcome everyone and make sure that our locations are suitable for the champagne tastes with a beer budget and the champagne tastes with a champagne budget (nothing against champagne or beer btw…).

To be honest, this can be an easier one to check off the list than you think. When the Ghyd team has located a potential destination, we simply act as if we are the client! It’s that simple. (Yes, its a perk of the job, but hey, somebody’s gotta do it!). From researching and booking flights to arranging a private chef, we track, analyze, compare, negotiate, navigate, operate, compensate, and even splurge in every area with the mindset that we are you! If it feels expensive to us, it will likely be expensive for you. If an unexpected expense occurred somewhere and caught us off guard, it’s going to catch you off guard.

We make sure that we are able to offer services that make sense to the wallet, while also making you feel like a king or queen.

Requirements:
  • Average/affordable flights
  • Goods and services are reasonably priced
  • Ease of use (accepting the US dollar and credit cards)
  • Avoid unexpected costs
Climate
Climate can be a little tricky at times. Google says one thing but the experience can say another. This is a perfect example of why we pride ourselves on knowing every aspect of what we offer. If we offer it, we’ve done it!

One of the most popular questions we get on a daily basis is, “when is the best time to go?” The short answer is, “Whenever it fits your schedule!” It might be a bit blunt, but it’s the truth. Ghyd makes sure that the destinations we choose offer quality year-round attractiveness. Even though there may be a rainy season and a dry season, we make sure that our locations are suitable for both times and that our guests will be satisfied with the climate no matter when they choose to go.

Requirements:
  • Destination offers year-round attractiveness
  • Must be accessible
  • Adventures and services offered at all times
Experiences
Traveler type A: Itineraries! Itineraries! Itineraries!
“We have a 15-minute window on Wednesday at 1:00 for snacks before we head to the biodiversity museum to learn about Panamanian ecosystems.”

Traveler type B: Whatever happens, happens
“I want to do a bunch of nothing and plan stuff when I get there.”

If you are in the scheduling process with us, it is likely that you have been asked, “What kind of week are you interested in?”

When you travel with Ghyd, we want to help build your week with us exactly as you’d like. When we decide to offer a location, we make sure that it’s perfect for both types of travelers. Check out our current experiences for some inspiration!

Requirements:
  • Able to accommodate all types of travelers

The most important safety rules while traveling are pretty similar to the same safety techniques you have likely inherited in your daily routine at home. Stay in groups, don’t walk down dark alleys in the middle of the night in a place you are not familiar with, keep your phone with you; lock your doors, etc. We can all assume those types of daily rituals have become nothing short of human nature. Let’s take a look at some of the more in-depth, easy to use, safety tips that will make you feel much more comfortable on your next experience in a new place.

My family is full of freckled, pale people. Our skin is like lighter fluid in the sun – we burn thoroughly and quickly. When I look back and reminisce about our vacations, I just see a bunch of cooked lobsters. As we have aged, we are all starting to see the long term effects of the sun. The freckles the sun has kissed us with are turning against us. All 6 of my family members have had some sort of pre-melanoma spot removed. This has not stopped us from enjoying the great outdoors, going to the beach, or showing skin – we have just gotten smarter and know the limits of our bodies. In Costa Rica and Panama, the sun can be quite strong since you’re closer to the equator – this makes people more susceptible to burning. Through my experience and some actual science, I want to equip you with some tips on how to have a burn-free vacation while in Central America.
